When should I take a test?
You should take a test after a missed period, or if you start noticing symptoms such as: breast tenderness, change in headaches, changes in acne, nausea and vomiting, heartburn, weight gain or sudden spotting.
What changes happen in my body:
When you are pregnant your body begins to produce increased amounts of hormones such as relaxin and oestrogen. This let your pelvis become more flexible. You will also begin to produce increases estrogen and progestogen to aid in the development of your fetus.
These changes in hormones create changes in mood as well, and even aid in the bond you form with your baby.
What are the stages?
Your pregnancy will have 3 stages.
The first trimester is from 0-12 weeks. This is often when most women find out about their pregnancy, and when it is most as risk of loss. You will begin to have changes in hormones, and experience symptoms like breast tenderness and fatigue in addition to vomiting and the start of pregnancy cravings.
The second trimester is from 13-28 weeks. Many women find this to be the easiest trimester. Your body has begun to get used to the changes in hormones and you will begin to develop a baby bump, which will grow from day to day. Most women notice stretch marks and darkening of nipples around this stage but say they expense less nausea and vomiting.
The third trimester is from 29-40 weeks. Not all women reach the 40 week mark and can still have healthy babies. Symptoms hear include swelling in your feet or ankles, false labor contractions, your baby dropping lower in your abdomen to prepare fo delivery, trouble sleeping, leaking pre-milk from your breast and shortness of breath.
After pregnancy?
It is important to care for yourself after labor and delivery, and bond with your baby. After delivery many women are at risk of developing post parts depression, a serious mental health condition that can cause a lack of bond between mother and baby. Your hormones will begin to drop, causes a change in emotions as well. Some women experience soreness and cramping. You will begin to produce milk for your baby, as well as the hormone prolactin, the mothering hormone.
